I liked what one supporter said of Weiner, “He should resign and then re-run for his position. If his constituents re-elect him, then the matter should be closed.”
Anyhow, here is what I wrote to Mr. Weiner. I also sent a copy of it to Nancy Pelosi and my Representative, Alyson Schwartz, since both of them were Democrat leaders calling for his resignation.
I want to start by saying that I am not in your district and that you don’t represent me, but, I respect what you have done in Congress for Democrats and the Nation.
I won’t say that I condone your personal activities act, in fact, I find them disgusting and feel an immense sorrow for your wife. As sad as it is, I also am not surprised by your actions as it appears that all men have an inability to treat women (and themselves) respectfully and honorably.
I’m writing to urge you to NOT step down from your position. I know that the media is making a big deal out of this. I know that both sides of the aisle are calling for you to step down. I’m sure the pressure is immense, but the RESPONSIBLE action is to accept the criticism and continue your work in Congress. Quite frankly, retiring to private life is an easy way out.
Originally, I felt that while your actions were disgusting, they were not illegal and that you had no reason to resign. When people came forward claiming you needed to step down because you lied, I considered that possible argument. However, if faithfulness and truthfulness were prerequisites for serving our Nation, few in our Nation would be qualified to serve. It is sad when the bare minimum for representing our Nation is that you haven’t actually committed a crime.
There are MANY other public servants who have committed illegal acts who are still representing their constituents. There are MANY who have and continue to have affairs while remaining in office. Until the Republicans are ready to clean their own party of Vitter and the many others who have also committed moral indiscretions, I urge you to continue to serve.
The actions that you performed are between you and your wife. I do wish you’d come forward and just admitted that you had sexted–like every other 13 year old with a camera phone. But if lying is the standard for which the Nation is calling for your resignation, I fear no one will be left in DC to turn off the lights.
Our Nation is being destroyed. Our middle class is being destroyed. Our economy is being destroyed. Please stay in office and fight for us. We cannot afford to lose your voice!
I’m really getting tired of having to explain the actions of some adults lately. First there was Arnold Schwarzenegger and his housekeeper’s love child, then this, and THEN some teacher at our high school was accused of inappropriate contact with a female student. SERIOUSLY?!
And parents want to take sex ed out of the schools? We need it IN the schools so our kids can simply keep up with current events!
It’s pretty bad when my 11 daughter and 13 year old son, upon hearing about the Weiner scandal responded with, “Boy, he’s an idiot.” (from the boy), and, “Mom, why do boys like to take pictures of that. I mean, it’s so gross.” (from the girl).
Okay, when MY children are the voice of reason, society is really going down hill.
